5 Malayalam films to watch right now |Malayalam films starter pack.

In 2019 I was introduced to the world of Malayalam films and at first, I was quite judgemental as I had never seen a Malayalam film in my life! Yes, you heard that right, not even one! Then one day I asked my friend to suggest to me some good films to watch, that are realistic, fun and not melodramatic- and the rest is history.

Introduction to Malayalam Films

So she gave me a pen drive and told me to copy a few Malayalam films and I was like “What! Don’t you know that I’ve never watched regional films!” She told me to just watch one, and then decide.

I have to say she was absolutely correct. I am now a fan of the Malayalam film industry and have realised that its way too underrated and deserves so much more because the movies I am listing below are gems in terms of story, acting, writing, direction and basically everything!

5 Evergreen Malayalam Films

  1. Bangalore Days
  2. Uyare
  3. Koode
  4. Charlie
  5. Ustad Hotel

Note: All these movies were seen without watching their trailer, so I had no clue about the story nor the actors.

1.Bangalore Days (2014)

Bangalore Days is one movie that I keep rewatching whenever I am having a dull day, it’s just magical, and it is beautifully written and directed by Anjali Menon(fangirl here!). Anjali Menon is famous for writing about family relationships but this one is at a different level. Starring an ensemble cast, with Nazriya Nazim, Nivin Pauly, and Dulquer Salmaan in lead roles this is the perfect -family, romantic comedy-drama film.

Divya, Krishnan, and Arjun are three cousins who are very close to each other who all end up in Bangalore. The beautiful thing about this film is how reality is depicted in fiction in the most accurate way! It shows different personalities, different cultures, and outlooks of people. This movie is the reason I fell in love with The Malayalam Film industry and the actors also.

This film has so many stories within itself that have left me awe-stricken and amazed by its realness and relatability. Look out for the ‘Maangalyam’ song, in the beginning, it is such a mood! I’ve made my friend, my sister and my mother all watch this movie and here I am telling you to go watch it after you read this article 🙂

2.Uyare (2019)

‘Inspiring’, ‘motivational’, ’emotional’, and also a feel-good movie at the same time – This is Uyare for you! Directed by Manu Ashokan, Uyare stars Parvathy Thiruvothu, Asif Ali, and Tovino Thomas in lead roles. Pallavi played by Parvathy is an acid attack survivor whose dream was always to be a pilot but the attack shattered her dreams but yet she still manages to complete her dream and I think if you see the film you will know how it happens.

The best part of the film is that you don’t feel pity for the character, you get inspired by Pallavi who never gave up. This movie is my go-to when I’m feeling really demotivated and need a boost up. This movie taught me that no matter what your circumstance or situation is you can always fly even if your wings are cut. Also, the soundtrack of Uyare is pretty good 🙂

3.Koode (2018)

The second film on the list directed by Anjali Menon starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Nazriya Nazim, and Parvathy Thiruvothu is Koode. This film is an adaptation of the Marathi film ‘Happy Journey’ and has won positive reviews from acclaimed critics. Unlike Bangalore Days, Koode is a sober film and is a psychological drama. It may be sober but it’s a magical and beautiful film.

Watching Koode was a different experience it kept me thinking till the end. So let me brief you on the special story – Joshua who is the main character works in a factory in Dubai. Upon hearing the demise of his sister he returns to India after a very long time. He is unperturbed, as he has now become an emotionless man contrary to what he was before. He was sent to Dubai with his uncle at the age of fifteen to work and support his family financially. This made him sour as his childhood was destroyed and he had to become a grown-up very soon.

For a drive, he takes a van and finds his sister, and realizes that only he can see and talk to her. Is she a ghost we don’t know? We don’t know – its for you to decide! See the film to know what happens next :). Just telling you, it is not a horror film, it’s a film with multiple layers of depth and amazing storytelling. Bonus – The soundtrack is fab!

4.Charlie (2015)

Directed by Martin Prakkat, Charlie is a film based on a mystery man named “Charlie”. Starring Dulquer Salmaan and Parvathy Thiruvothu in lead roles this film also has many layers of depth in every story it says.

Tessa who is running to avoid her marriage rents a room with the help of her friend. The room/flat is filled with mysterious articles and sketches of the previous occupant. In the beginning, she doesn’t like the room and is quite disappointed also. But when she starts reading and seeing all the sketches that the previous occupant drew, she gets really interested to know about the mystery guy. She starts finding and asking people whose sketches he drew and gets even more curious to find him.

The whole film is about Charlie playing hide and seek with Tessa. The whole journey of Tessa searching for Charlie is no less than a crossword puzzle but also a journey of self-discovery for Tessa.

5.Ustad Hotel (2012)

Ustad Hotel is a commercially successful film and has also won three National Film Awards. Directed by Anwar Rasheed and written by my favorite Anjali Menon – Ustad Hotel stars Dulquer Salmaan and Thilakan in lead roles. Every time we see movies about a father-son/daughter or mother-son/daughter relationship, but to see a beautiful story about a grandfather and his grandson is rare to see. Ustad Hotel is one story that just like every other film listed here shows relatable characters and real-life instances. The beauty of Anjali’s writing is the detail in every scene and so many small instances that show so much meaning and depth.

The story revolves around Faizi who wants to become a chef but his father doesn’t approve of it. Upon the rejection of his father, Faizi goes to his grandfather who runs a small hotel to stay there until he finds some solution. His stay with his grandfather changes the perspective of life that Faizi had previously, and is greatly inspired by his grandpa’s vision. Seeing this movie, I felt inspired at so many different layers. The greatest lesson this movie taught me is that money isn’t everything in life. Respect, passion, and kindness value more than any other wealth in this world. If people realize this the world would be such a better place!

I am hooked to Malayalam Films and the beautiful stories and diversity in their movies. It’s such a great feeling to see films, like those mentioned above, as all of them come with a message. Another thing that amazes me is the rawness in every character, no makeup, and nothing flashy, unlike most top Bollywood films. ( not all, some)

I hope you guys like this list and please do check out these movies and let us know whether you like them or not in the comments. I am always open to suggestions and recommendations 🙂
